Local candidates stance on Heathrow expansion

Heathrow’s impact, on the local area is a key voters issue for local constituencies. Whichever party is elected, they will be faced with taking an early decision about airport expansion in the South East.

Teddington Action Group asked Twickenham Constituency Candidates four questions about their stance. Here are their answers:

Vince Cable, Lib Dem

1. Do you personally support the building of a third runway to allow Heathrow Airport to expand?
No.

2. What is the view of your party on the expansion of Heathrow Airport?
My party is strongly and explicitly opposed to Heathrow expansion.

3. If elected, can local people count on you to oppose any expansion of Heathrow Airport?
Yes. As I have been consistently as the MP, going back to the T5 public inquiry.

4. If a government, made up wholly or in part by your party, were to recommend Heathrow expansion, will you match the commitment of Zac Goldsmith (in your neighbouring constituency) to trigger an immediate by-election?
I would not serve in a government which pressed ahead with R3.
But I do not agree with Zac Goldsmith’s position of precipitating an unnecessary by-election.  He proposes it because of his own political discomfort where he is seriously out of line with his own party leadership, which wishes to press ahead with Heathrow expansion.  I am not in that position.

Tania Mathias, Conservative

1. Do you personally support the building of a third runway to allow Heathrow Airport to expand?
I fully support Teddington Action Group and I am against a third runway.

2. What is the view of your party on the expansion of Heathrow Airport?
While I and fellow Conservatives in this area and the Conservative Mayor of London are opposed to the Third runway, regardless, my Party – as part of the Coalition Government – is waiting for the Davies review before taking a view. Contrary to some literature that residents have received from other candidates, neither David Cameron nor George Osborne have stated their views ahead of the report’s findings.

3. If elected, can local people count on you to oppose any expansion of Heathrow Airport?
If elected MP for Twickenham I will fight against Heathrow expansion.

4. If a government, made up wholly or in part by your party, were to recommend Heathrow expansion, will you match the commitment of Zac Goldsmith (in your neighbouring constituency) to trigger an immediate by-election?
I am prepared to consider all options in order to fight Heathrow expansion and night flights over our homes.

NICK GRANT, LABOUR

In spite of repeated requests, Nick Grant did not issue written answers to our specific questions, however sent us a video, found on his website. So we transcribed parts of it here:

I live under the flight path myself, my children have gone to local schools under the flight path..so I’ve no brief at all for extra noise or extra pollution, but I am a Labour Politician and… I’m worried about the jobs that may go, should Heathrow not be able to compete. My business experience tells me that should Gatwick be the choice, that immediately there’ll be competitive pressure on Heathrow and those jobs will start to go. And there are 100k jobs dependent directly or indirectly upon Heathrow. So I’ve no brief for expansion there, but I will fight for those jobs. At the same time, should Heathrow expand, I will fight to keep the pollution and noise to the absolute minimum, that’s my promise.

TANYA WILLIAMS, GREEN PARTY

1. Do you personally support the building of a third runway to allow Heathrow Airport to expand?
No.

2. What is the view of your party on the expansion of Heathrow Airport?
The Green Party is firmly against expansion of Heathrow. It would increase traffic congestion in the area, cause sleep deprivation and worsen pollution to surrounding areas. It would also create more emissions, which cause climate change.

3. If elected, can local people count on you to oppose any expansion of Heathrow Airport?
Yes.

4. If a government, made up wholly or in part by your party, were to recommend Heathrow expansion, will you match the commitment of Zac Goldsmith (in your neighbouring constituency) to trigger an immediate by-election?
Yes, but would point out that any Green people government would never recommend expansion!

BARRY EDWARDS, UKIP

1. Do you personally support the building of a third runway to allow Heathrow Airport to expand?
No.

2. What is the view of your party on the expansion of Heathrow Airport?
Expansion is not an option (my party and I are united on this). UKIP would not allow a 3rd runway under any circumstance and if there must be an additional runway in the South-East, it should be at Gatwick.

3. If elected, can local people count on you to oppose any expansion of Heathrow Airport?
Yes. I have campaigned against Terminal 5 and the 3rd Runway for the last 15 years.

4. If a government, made up wholly or in part by your party, were to recommend Heathrow expansion, will you match the commitment of Zac Goldsmith (in your neighbouring constituency) to trigger an immediate by-election?
Unfortunately, Zac’s commitment is meaningless, he may say it, but can he do it?

At the recent candidate hustings held at Teddington Baptist Church we put forward the question of Heathrow Expansion so that each viewpoint could be heard by the audience. You can see the answers to each question here – the Heathrow question is number 4.

Are the candiates for or against Heathrow expansion and how do they intend to protect their prospective constituents from it’s inevitable consequences.

Heathrow is a nightmare and should never have been built where it is. If expansion is needed then it should be away from residential areas such as over the channel. Or if that’s not possible another run way at Gatwick.

I have sympathy for all the people employed at HeThrow but in Hampton where I live we already suffer noise from being on the helicopter corridor and I tracing routing for airliners overhead is unacceptable
